I don't think I have been spoken to with quite such ignorance in London before. I have a 9 month old cute little baby and went in with my mum for a cuppa. The lady who greeted us was pretty brusque and after 5 mins hanging around waiting for our 'allotted seats' to become free, I parked myself temporarily on an empty seat to feed (breast feed) my little one, fairly discreetly as always. After 5 mins the area she wanted us to sit in (despite there being other tables free) was still occupied so we decided to take our leave and head somewhere else.

On the way out she asked me why we were leaving and I said because I thought that the service was a bit unfriendly, to which she retorted,
"It's not a mother and baby club and I don't want to watch you breastfeeding your baby in here anyway".

I was absolutely shocked and horrified (it is 2010 after all) - I said that I couldn't believe what she had said to me and she just became ruder and ruder (and ruder),finishing off with a 'get out, we don't want people like you in here anyway'

She actually had a full on argument about it with my mother in the middle of her cafe whilst people were relaxing and having a drink

I would love all breastfeeding mothers to refuse to go there and spread the word!

I am very sorry you had such a terrible experience in La Bruschetta, in this day and age, you would think people would be less ignorant about something as natural as breast feeding your baby in public, particularly as it was a woman who was so rude to you, this only makes it all the more insulting.

I have been in there a couple of times and the staff were rather unfriendly, I also had to wait quite a while for someone to notice and serve me. There are other, more 'baby friendly' cafes in the area, St Jermain is a lovely little French cafe which welcomes families, so maybe try a new cafe.

Thanks for the supportive message. You're right - there's lots of great cafes in crystal palace where I am greeted with a smile and fantastic service (and in a couple of them they can even remember the name of my little one). It was only the second time I have been to la Brushetta and I imagine it was also my last!!

Thanks for the tip off re: la brushetta - nothing more irritating than been made to feel like your not welcome with a young family. Worth highlighting the Bridge Tavern on the penge side of crystal palace park - really nice (and during the daytime relatively calm) atmosphere with very friendly staff. Food is good (if a little overpriced for what it is) but a good place to head to especially if you're in CP park.

I agree that some of the staff at La Bruscetta are pretty rude. It used to be much more child friendly. Have you tried Domali (just a few doors along). The staff are super friendly there.

Fact is the owner is a bit of a womaniser and has had a number of affairs with young mums so his wife has become a little sensitve about this. Best to avoid the place and go to one of the many lovely cafes we are blessed with. I heard they are closing down - thie site is up for rent on right move. good ridance!!!

I've just seen this discussion and I'm really shocked. I see the original incident was a year ago, but the last poster commented in December. All I can say is that I love Bruschetta, I don't know if they've changed the staff - it sounds like you had a horrible experience mbradley and there's certainly no defending it - but I've found them to be particularly charming - more than most - and welcoming to all comers. I've seen them on the receiving end of an earful from a brattish young customer too, and handle it calmly and professionally. There are always dozens of mums and babies/kids in there, having a good time and being well looked after, so I'd hate for somebody to be put off by this (to me) out-of-character incident.
