It is quite scary watching the news with all the reports of stabbings in South East London recently, it is one thing to watch the stories of victims in other parts of London and the rest of the UK, but when the crimes are taking hold of your local boroughs, streets and schools it can become a life threatening situation, affecting far too many people on a daily basis.

In May this year teenager Nick Pearton was stabbed to death in Sydenham, after being chased across Home Park, by at least ten boys armed with knives and baseball bats. Nick bled to death in his mother's arms in a takeaway shop that is less than a mile from where I live and passing the huge memorial of flowers, letters and teddies at the shopfront, was a harrowing reminder of the destruction and heartache such dangerous disregard and violent idiocy can cause.

Sadly on Sunday 5th September the emergency services were called to Lucas Court, on Bell Green Lane after a man in his 40's was stabbed to death. The incident took place at approximately 3am and the unidentified male was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons told thisislondon:

"We are asking anyone who was in the Bell Green area of Sydenham, and saw or heard anything in the vicinity of Lucas Court from around 03.00hrs, to come forward."

The spate of stabbings that has swept London over the last few years has claimed the lives of hundreds of people, some young, some not so young and I can only imagine what it would feel like to lose someone special, in such a senseless and tragic way, but the attitude towards these killings is a fundamental part of the problem that needs to change.

Too many of those killed were taken through jealous vengeance, stupidity, mistaken identity, bad timing and unfortunate associations, orchestrated by desperate, unintelligent products of a degenerating society. Yes, a great many deaths are a result of gang allegiance, turf wars and drugs, but while the government and middle England continue to pass it off as a cultural problem, then it will surely mushroom and spiral out of control. As a community we need to look out for each other and work together to help convict the criminals, educate the young and instill a sense of pride, in order to help change cultural attitudes.

The murder in Sydenham is the latest incident to shake the local area, a 28 year old man has been arrested in connection with the killing, but if you or anyone you know has any information at all, then you can report it anonymously to Crimestoppers.
